Understanding the Mayan Calendar
The Tzolk'in (Divine Calendar)
This is a 260-day calendar used for spiritual and astrological purposes. It consists of 20 Day Signs combining with 13 Galactic Tones. Your specific combination represents your core personality and life path.
The Haab' (Civil Calendar)
The Haab' is a 365-day solar calendar, similar to our modern calendar, used for agricultural and civil events. It consists of 18 months of 20 days, plus a 5-day "nameless" period called Wayeb'.
The Long Count
The Long Count is a non-repeating, linear calendar used to track historical and mythical time over vast cycles, typically formatted as Baktun.Katun.Tun.Uinal.Kin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Mayan birthdays.
There are 20 Day Signs (like Crocodile, Wind, Night) in the Tzolk'in calendar. The Maya believed that your Day Sign influences your personality, strengths, and life path, similar to Western Zodiac signs.
There are 13 Galactic Tones. While the Day Sign represents 'what' you are, the Tone represents 'how' you operate or the nature of your energy. Together they create your unique Mayan signature.
Our calculator uses the widely accepted GMT (Goodman-Martinez-Thompson) correlation constant (584283) to convert standard Gregorian dates into accurate Mayan calendar dates.
The Maya tracked different cycles of time simultaneously. The Tzolk'in (260 days) was for sacred rituals, the Haab' (365 days) for agricultural seasons, and the Long Count for deep historical time.
The Long Count and Tzolk'in calendars run continuously without leap days. The Haab' (365 days) is similar to our solar year but lacks a leap year correction, meaning it slowly shifts in relation to the actual seasons over centuries.
The first number is the B'ak'tun. December 21, 2012 marked the end of the 13th B'ak'tun (12.19.19.17.19 to 13.0.0.0.0). Birthdays before this date typically start with 12, while those after start with 13.
